Na Yoonsun

“Before an endless field of choices, creation becomes paralyzed.” — from the artist’s note
This phrase most concisely reveals Na Yoon Sun’s creative attitude. Amid today’s excess of information, she sets self-imposed constraints to step beyond learned zones of safety. Four coordinate points—an invisible minimum unit upon the canvas—are where every story begins. Na’s paintings embrace strict rules while capturing the flow of chance seeping through their gaps. Arrows and grids may not remain on the surface, yet this unseen structure guides every brushstroke and every stream of color.

Such rules are not restrictions, but devices that narrow direction in order to open up possibility. Upon the tension created by order, blurring and cracking, overlapping and spacing appear unannounced. The fine fractures formed as pigment dries, the unexpected overlays of color, and the stains left as paint soaks into the surface are territories beyond even the artist’s control. What viewers ultimately encounter is a one-of-a-kind “map in the present tense,” woven by intention and coincidence.

The colors and lines of her work draw from Korean traditional gilsanghwa (auspicious paintings). The waves of the Ten Symbols of Longevity, the curves of cranes, the petals of peonies, the rhythm of clouds in folk paintings—these motifs are dismantled and recomposed, suggested not as distinct images but through planes of color and fluid movements. Up close, the trembling of fine brushwork emerges; from afar, broad curves and expansive fields of color form a singular flow. In between, the auspicious symbolism brushes past as a sensation prior to language.

A “map that is hidden yet always ready to appear”—Bigahyeondo. Rather than providing fixed interpretation, this exhibition invites visitors to trace their own routes of discovery. With the shifting angle of light and the movement of gaze, the canvas is constantly renewed, and the hidden coordinates reveal themselves at any moment. Bigahyeondo is not a finished chart but an open map rewritten at every instant.

Even within firm rules, new paths and possibilities endlessly arise. Every fleeting change becomes an auspicious present moment, and each time the canvas finds yet another direction. This map, revealed through concealment and concealed through revelation, ultimately illuminates the hidden routes each of us carries within.
